If you’re anything like us, you love getting the shot, but you love nature even more.
Here’s the deal, if getting the shot means hurting the place or the subject, it’s not worth it.
As nature photographers, we’re not just capturing the beauty of the Earth, we’re part of its protection squad.
Part of our body of work is creating images that inspire others to care, respect and even fall in love with nature enough to help protect it too.
So, because our Earth is not a prop ~ here’s your friendly, slightly sassy reminder list:
First of all… Don’t be a jerk
You know the one. The rule-breaking, path-trampling, selfie-chasing wildlife harasser. Don’t be that person. Be the one nature would high-five if it had hands.
Scouting = Still Respecting
Even when you’re scouting a new location, treat the land as sacred. Stick to trails, don’t cross private property without permission (no matter how epic the view) and don’t disturb the quiet just because it’s “just a recon mission.”
Leave No Trace, Like… Literally
That granola bar wrapper in your coat pocket? Don’t “accidentally” drop it. And if you find trash that isn’t yours, bonus karma for picking it up. Every footprint, snack and forgotten item leaves an imprint.
Keep Your Distance (Zoom Lenses Exist for a Reason)
Let animals be wild. Approaching too closely stresses them out and can alter their behavior. Stay far enough away that they don’t change what they’re doing.
No Baiting, No Calls, No Fake Setups
It may make for a cool photo - but it’s not worth disrupting the natural order of things. Wildlife isn’t here to perform for us.
Be a Steward, Not Just a Storyteller
Use your platform, your art, your words, your influence to educate and inspire. Let people feel the awe that nature gives you. Then gently show them how to protect it.
“We believe every great photo should leave no damage in its wake. The wilder the place, the more it deserves our reverence. That’s when the real magic happens.”
– Alan & Gina Stenback
Let’s keep capturing beauty without costing the Earth anything in return.
That's it for today. Until next time, keep exploring,
-Alan
