From Forests to Beaches
What Changing Landscapes Does for a Photographer
Most of my work begins in the mountains.
High altitude.
Thin air.
Night skies among mountain peaks.
Still mornings in the pines.
Long shadows stretching across alpine lakes.
In Colorado, I know how the light behaves. I know how storms build over a ridge. I know how to wait for first light to slip across a distant peak.
There’s a rhythm to it.
And rhythm builds confidence.
But something interesting happens when you change landscapes.
When forests turn to cliffs.
When still lakes become moving water.
When thin mountain air becomes salt wind coming off the ocean.
Your eye wakes up again.
You can’t rely on habit.
You can’t rely on muscle memory.
You respond differently.
And that’s where the growth I crave lives. That’s where my skills level truly expands.
When we head to Puerto Rico’s west coast this spring, we’re stepping into a completely different environment.
Sea cliffs instead of tree lines.
Lighthouses instead of ridgelines.
Tide and wind instead of alpine stillness.
The light moves differently near the ocean. It reflects, bounces, softens.
The horizon opens.
The compositions shift.
It’s not better. It’s not worse.
It’s expansive.
Changing terrain sharpens your instincts. It forces you to slow down. To observe more closely. To compose more intentionally.
And for photographers who’ve mostly worked in one type of environment, that shift can be transformational.
This Coastal Photography Workshop & Retreat in Puerto Rico isn’t just about traveling somewhere beautiful.
It’s about placing yourself in a new creative environment - with time, guidance and space to refine how you see.
We’ll work sunrise and sunset along cliffs and beaches.
We’ll slow down.
We’ll analyze light.
We’ll adjust composition in real time.
We’ll talk through decisions in the field.
And yes, we’ll come home with powerful images.
But more importantly, you’ll come home with expanded vision.
We have just a few spots remaining for May 25 – June 1st, 2026.
Registration closes soon.
If the idea of shifting landscapes and sharpening your eye in the process resonates with you, now is the time to take a closer look.

From forests to beaches… sometimes the best thing you can do for your photography is change the terrain beneath your feet.
